Our place is not on the grid but runs on alternative power, supplied by the sun. For more detail see under Alternative Energy.

For hot water all year round we have solar hot water systems. The solar hot water system for the studio is a simple thermo siphoning system with the pot belly as a back up. The solar hot water system for the house is more sophisticated with an electronic controller and a pump. This system is backed up by the wet back on the kitchen range.

The drinking water is rain water, stored in concrete tanks, pumped to a header tank once a month currently with a petrol driven pump (we are planning to replace this with an electric pump run by the alt power system) and then gravity fed back to us.

A gray water system (sub surface irrigation) takes care of the used water from the kitchen and the shower.

The irrigation water for the garden is supplied by a communal dam.
