Following the Permculture design principles we are working towards a high degree of self sufficiency in our food supply. Our vegetable garden supplies us with yummy and nutritous vegetables all year round. Our fruit trees are producing better every year and provide us with plums, peaches, nectarines, elderberry, apples, pears, figs, olives, tamarillo,s passionfruit, guavas, bananas, persimmon, feijoa and citrus fruit.
We have two breeds of chickens: Barnevelder and Australorp. The Barnevelder are medium size birds which produce big eggs quite consistently over the year. The Australorp are a bigger bird, a dual purpose chicken good for meat and eggs. We keep them in separate runs as we like to keep the old breeds pure. Their runs have trees and a cosy chicken house for roosting and nesting. We find the taste of these eggs unbeatable, just delicious. We love to have ducks and have them roam in the orchards, as they eat the slugs and snails. In the past we have lost a lot of ducklings to numerous predators and also the fact that duck are poor mothers. Now we have a breeding pair of Buff Orbington ducks. Currently we are awaiting their egg bounty impatiently as our Bantam chicken mothers are ready to take care of the eggs and raise the ducklings. Our protein needs are further met with milk from our Jersey house cow Molly. We regularly make yoghurt, quark, kefir and different kinds of cheeses. And of course occasiionally we enjoy beef from our home kill.
